How to Make Perfect Candles with Silicone Molds
Complete Step-by-Step Tutorial, Pro Tips & Troubleshooting for Beautiful, Professional-Looking Scented Candles
Why Silicone Molds Are Best for Candle Making
Making candles in silicone molds is the easiest way to get beautiful, detailed, perfectly shaped candles without years of practice. Unlike rigid plastic, metal or glass molds, flexible silicone releases cleanly, captures every fine detail, and works with every type of wax: soy, beeswax, paraffin, palm, coconut and gel wax.
With the right technique and a good quality silicone mold, even beginners can make candles that look professionally made. This guide will walk you through the full process, share insider tips, and show you how to fix the most common candle making problems.
What You Will Need
- Wax — soy wax, beeswax, paraffin or your preferred blend
- Fragrance oil — candle-grade, 6-10% of wax weight for good scent throw
- Candle wicks — correct size for your mold diameter
- Silicone candle mold — clean and completely dry
- Double boiler or melting pot — for safe, even wax melting
- Thermometer — to control pouring temperature
- Wick holder or chopsticks — to hold the wick centered
- Optional: dye, glitter, dried flowers, decorative additives
Step-by-Step Candle Making Tutorial
Melt the Wax
Weigh your wax and melt it gently in a double boiler over medium-low heat. Do not overheat — wax should reach 70-75°C (158-167°F). Stir slowly and evenly. Never leave melting wax unattended.
Add Fragrance & Color
Once the wax is fully melted, remove from heat. Let cool to 60-65°C (140-149°F), then stir in fragrance oil slowly and thoroughly. Add liquid candle dye if desired, stirring gently to avoid bubbles. Mixing at the right temperature ensures fragrance binds well with the wax.
Prepare the Mold & Wick
Ensure your silicone mold is clean, dry and at room temperature. Cold molds can cause frosting and surface defects. Secure the wick in the center of the mold cavity — use a wick holder or rest it across two chopsticks laid across the top of the mold.
Pour the Wax
Pour the wax slowly into the mold in a thin stream, pouring down the side of the cavity to minimize air bubbles. Fill to just below the top edge. For intricate 3D designs, pour slowly and pause to let wax flow into all the small details and crevices.
Release Air Bubbles
Tap the sides and bottom of the mold firmly on your work surface several times. This brings trapped air bubbles to the surface. Pop any visible surface bubbles with a toothpick or heat gun on low setting. This step is critical for a smooth, flawless finish.
Let Cool Slowly
Let the candle cool and harden at room temperature, away from drafts, direct sunlight and heat sources. Do NOT put it in the fridge or freezer — rapid cooling causes cracking, frosting and sinkholes. Small candles take 12-24 hours; large 3D candles take 24-48 hours.
Top-Up if Needed
As wax cools it shrinks, which can leave a dip or sinkhole around the wick. If needed, pour a thin second layer of slightly cooler wax to fill the depression and create a flat bottom. Let set again completely.
Demold Gently
Once the candle is completely hard and cool to the touch, gently flex the silicone mold walls away from the candle all around. Then push up from the bottom. The candle should slide out easily. Do not pull hard by the wick — this can pull it out of the wax.
Cure Before Burning
Trim the wick to about 5mm (1/4 inch). Let the candle cure for at least 24-48 hours before burning for best scent throw. For soy wax blends, a full 1-2 week cure gives the strongest, most even fragrance release.
Pro Tips for Perfect Results
- For ultra-crisp details: pour wax a few degrees warmer and let cool very slowly. The wax will flow into every tiny detail of the mold.
- For a glossy surface: ensure your mold is clean and at room temperature; pour wax at 60-65°C; and avoid disturbing while setting.
- For no sinkholes: do a second top-up pour once the first layer has formed a skin. Fill slightly above the edge and trim flat after full curing.
- For strong scent: use 8-10% fragrance load, add at 60-65°C, stir thoroughly but gently, and cure the full recommended time.
- For 3D shaped candles: pour in two stages — first a thin layer to coat the inner details, let set slightly, then fill the rest. This reduces bubbles in deep crevices.
Troubleshooting Common Problems
Most candle making problems are easy to fix once you know the cause. Here are the most common issues and exactly how to fix them:
| Problem | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Air bubbles / pinholes | Trapped air from pouring too fast | Pour slower, tap mold firmly after pouring, pop bubbles with toothpick |
| Sinkhole / dip around wick | Wax shrinks as it cools | Do a second top-up pour once surface has set |
| White frosting / crystal bloom | Cooled too fast, common with soy wax | Cool slowly at room temp; use a wax blend; warm mold slightly before pouring |
| Candle sticks in mold | Not fully cured; or mold residue buildup | Wait longer; clean mold thoroughly between uses |
| Cracks or fractures | Cooled too quickly; temperature shock | Always cool at room temperature; no fridge |
| Weak scent throw | Too little fragrance; added too hot; not cured | Use 6-10% fragrance load; add at 60-65°C; cure full time |
| Wet / blotchy surface | Wax pulling away from mold wall | Pour a few degrees warmer; purely cosmetic |
| Wick is off-center | Wick shifted during pouring | Double check wick position after pouring; use a wick holder |
