Five Universal Demolding Principles
These rules apply no matter what material you are casting. Build them into your routine and you will immediately see fewer broken pieces and less frustration.
1. Wait Until Fully Cured — Never Rush It
Premature demolding is the number one cause of tears dents and deformations. If your piece is still soft or sticky in the center it is not ready. Always follow the full cure time for your material and add a little extra in cold or humid weather.
2. Push From The Bottom — Do Not Pry From The Edges
Press up gently from the bottom center of the cavity to release the seal and let air enter. Prying with a tool or pulling from one edge puts uneven stress on the mold and your piece and is the fastest way to tear thin mold walls or snap delicate details.
3. Peel Gradually — Work Your Way Around
Once the bottom releases work your fingers around the edges peeling the silicone away from the piece little by little. Go slowly especially with detailed shapes. Rushing this step is where most fine details get damaged.
4. Temperature Helps — Warm Or Cool Strategically
Most materials shrink slightly as they cool or set which helps release them from the mold. A short trip to the fridge or freezer often makes a stubborn piece pop right out. Warm materials are softer and more flexible but also more likely to tear so choose based on your material.
5. Light Release Agent When Needed
For naturally sticky materials or very deep detailed shapes a light mist of food grade release spray or a thin coat of oil can help. Use sparingly — too much will affect the surface finish of your piece and build up inside the mold over time.

Chocolate And Candy
- Chill in fridge for 10-15 minutes until fully set
- Tap mold firmly on counter upside down
- Chocolate should release cleanly with one firm tap
- If stuck return to fridge for a few more minutes
- Avoid touching piece surfaces with bare fingers
Cold Process Soap
- Wait 24-48 hours until firm to the touch
- Pull sides away first to break the seal
- Push from bottom center and flex gently
- Gel phase soaps release easier after cooling fully
- If too soft leave one more day before trying again
Wax Melts And Candles
- Let cool completely to room temperature first
- 10 minutes in freezer helps wax shrink and release
- Flex mold sides all around before pushing out
- Avoid overheating wax which causes extra sticking
- Wipe mold clean between pours for best results
Resin And Epoxy
- Wait full cure time demolding early causes bends
- Start at the edges and peel silicone inward
- For deep molds release air as you go slowly

Gypsum And Concrete
- Demold when firm but still slightly damp green state

Tricky Shapes — How To Handle Difficult Designs
Some shapes are naturally harder to demold than others especially deep cavities undercuts and very fine details. Here is how to handle the most common problem designs.
Deep Narrow Cavities
Tall narrow shapes create suction that makes release surprisingly difficult. The deeper the cavity the stronger the vacuum effect when you try to pull the piece out.
Release one edge first to break the vacuum seal, then work air down the side as you push from the bottom. Short freeze helps material shrink just enough to break contact.
Fine Delicate Details
Thin fins sharp points and tiny surface details are the first things to break during demolding. They are also the parts that make your product look premium so protecting them matters.
Always start demolding from the thickest part of the piece first. Work toward fine details last so the main body is already free and you can be extra gentle with fragile sections.
Undercuts And Overhangs
Shapes that widen inward or have protruding sections will mechanically lock into the mold. These require flexible silicone and proper technique to release without damage.
Use softer Shore A silicone for undercut shapes. Peel mold away from the piece rather than pulling the piece out. Flex the silicone around undercut sections one at a time.
Large Flat Pieces
Big flat surfaces create huge contact area and strong suction. These are the shapes where people most often end up prying with tools and damaging their molds.
Start at one corner and peel diagonally across rather than trying to lift the whole piece at once. Breaking the seal progressively eliminates suction without force.
Common Demolding Mistakes And Fixes

Using a knife or screwdriver to pry pieces out
Always push from the bottom and peel the silicone away. Metal tools scratch and cut mold interiors permanently ruining the surface finish and creating future sticking points.
Demolding as soon as the surface looks set
The outside cures first. The inside can still be soft and will tear or deform. Always wait the full recommended cure time or test firmness at the thickest point before removing.
Pulling straight up on one side
Pulling unevenly bends and stretches both the piece and the mold. Release all sides evenly first then push from below. Your piece should come out straight not at an angle.
Heavy release spray on every pour
Most materials do not need release agent with good silicone molds. Overuse builds up residue that dulls surface detail and actually makes sticking worse over time. Use only when needed.
